Technical losses are caused by network characteristics and the nature of the load flow during the delivery of electric energy. Technical losses are related to the physical nature of the equipment and infrastructure of the power distribution systems, i.e., I²R loss– or copper loss – in the conductor cables, transformers, switches, and generators. Loads are not included in the losses because they are actually intended to receive as much energy as possible. Technical losses can be accurately calculated or estimated using load flow studies if network configuration and load flow data is available. Non-Technical Losses from internal process issues (inaccurate billing information, defective meters, etc.) and external issues (electricity / water theft, vandalism, corruption, tampering, undetected load etc.) and cannot always be directly measured, but can be estimated, continue to be a mayor challenge and prevent more than often that Utilities can deliver acceptable levels of Safe and reliable Services and collect revenue for services delivered. Non-technical losses can be calculated as the difference between total losses and technical losses.
