networks

has
to
be

into

Underground
cabling
will
be
one
of
the
basic
elements
in
renovation
of
rural
area
overhead
(OH)
line
distribution
networks.
Cabling
improves
network
reliability
and
has
an
impact
on
the
outage
costs
;
as
a
result,
the
lifetime
costs
and
thereby
the
total
costs
of
the
network
are reduced.

The Cable and Overhead Conductor network has the highest impact on reliability in electricity distribution
, because more than
80 % of the customer-experienced outages
are caused by these Networks.

The Overhead Conductor Networks are less expensive than the Underground Cable Networks, but
is more exposed to faults
in comparison with underground cable networks.

Degradation
of
the
cable
sheath:
There
are
several
reasons
why
the
sheathing
material
may
degrade,
including
excessive
heat
or
cold,
chemicals,
weather
conditions,
and
abrasion
of
the
sheath.
All
of
these
factors
can
ultimately
cause
electrical
failure as the insulated cores are no longer protected by the sheathing as originally designed.

Heating
of
cable:
Excessive
heating
of
the
cable
will
cause
degradation
of
the
insulation
and
sheathing
material
and
premature
failure.
The
heat
may
come
from
an
external
source
or
may
be
generated
by
the
resistance
to
current
flow
in
the
conductor - a particular problem if the cable is overloaded and/or underrated for the application.
